Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive at the 'My Secret' breast form and prosthesis salon in New York. Should you have a question that is not covered here, please feel free to contact us and we'll be pleased to offer whatever assistance we can. Please also see our breast cancer fact sheet for further information. Q.: What exactly is a breast form? A: breast form is a customized prosthesis that is designed to to simulate the weight, feel, appearance, and movement of the natural breast. Customized breast forms are extremely realistic and match the body in color, weight and movement. An expertly designed and properly fitted breast form is virtually indistinguishable from a natural breast even when wearing a strapless dress, a bathing suit, or form fitting clothes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What are most breast prostheses or breast forms made of? A: The majority of weighted breast prostheses are made of silicon gel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Is this the same material as found in breast implants? A: It has a similar origin but is not the same since external breast prostheses are 'cured' in a manufacturing process and are not in a liquid state. And of course, this silicone is not inside your body so does not carry the risks sometimes associated with cosmetic breast implants. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: If a breast prosthesis tears or is punctured, does silicone hurt the skin or the body? A: No, the silicone cannot be absorbed through the skin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What types of prostheses are on the market? A: There are two basic types of breast forms, weighted (having weight to them) and non-weighted. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Which type of breast form will I wear first? A: It depends on the woman. You may wish to wear a light weighted foam form to fill out a leisure or "after surgery" bra until you are fitted with a permanent weighted prosthesis. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Why do I need a weighted breast prosthesis (form) after breast surgery? A: A properly fitted breast prosthesis helps to replace the weight lost after breast surgery. This replacement is partly for cosmetic and psychological reasons but it is also to keep your body in balance and in proper form. When a natural breast is removed the body is no longer in balance and will compensate with slight curving of the spine and 'shoulder drop'. Both conditions may lead to chronic lower back and neck pain. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: If I am small breasted or had partial surgery such as lumpectomy, do I still need a weighted breast prosthesis? A: Yes. Even if you are small breasted you should replace the weight because you will also need the weight to help hold your bra in place around the rib cage. A light non-weighted breast form may be just as shaping in a bra but may slip during certain movements. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Are there different types of prostheses? A: Yes, symmetrical breast forms (can be turned to fit either side of the body) and asymmetrical prostheses (fits only the right or the left side of the body). Also, breast forms can be designed for special sorts of activities – even for water sports or for strenuous physical activity. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Are prostheses expensive? A: A custom formed prosthesis can be expensive because they are not mass-produced. Each one is made by hand and follows several precise steps and procedures. Prostheses are also considered medical devices and are regulated by the FDA. Manufactures carefully monitor the manufacturing and sale of breast forms through on site quality assurance and warranty card information. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How soon after surgery should I be fitted with a permanent external prosthesis? A: Your doctor will tell you when you are ready to be fitted. This may take from four to six or eight weeks after surgery. The chest wall has to heal and the soreness decrease before you will be ready. |
